Environmental Awareness Education for Children

As the twig is bent, so is the tree inclined; so environmental education is very important for our children. Environmental education is the process of developing attitudes, value judgments, knowledge and skills for the protection of the environment, exhibiting the environment-friendly behaviors and reading out their results. The sooner the children begin being educated for environmental awareness, the more efficient the result will be. Because the interests and attitudes that constitute in early ages (pre-school, school age) form the fundamentals of the desired behaviors in the future. The value judgments and attitudes especially in childhood and at a younger age, are very important in the development of future empathy in the relations with nature in the early ages, and in the constitution of the love of nature. Environmental education addresses children's cognitive, affective and psycho-motor learning areas. The constitution of these values means the demonstration of environmentally friendly behaviors towards environmental protection. These developmental periods, which need to be taken into consideration, will then help individuals develop beneficial, conscious behaviors towards the environment, and thus play a role in learning effectively. Within the scope of environmental education, children are encouraged to play nature related games and experience living in nature. With these games and experiences, children develop a sense of responsibility towards nature and learn to be environmentally friendly. Children who learn that nature is a value, perceive that by means of all sense organs, make an effort to protect wildlife. Thus, in order to leave a livable world for our children, who are the true owners of the good days, we must support environmental protection education.
