Turkey’s environmental strategy regarding mandatory plastic bag fees has achieved significant environmental and economic milestones, preventing approximately 2.6 million tons of plastic waste between January 2019 and June 2025.
According to data from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, the reduction in plastic bag usage has provided both environmental and climate benefits. During this period, economic savings of approximately 20 billion TL were achieved, and 121,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions were successfully prevented. These figures demonstrate that correct environmental policies yield measurable and concrete gains for the national economy.
Major Progress in Resource Recovery via the "Zero Waste Project"
The reduction of plastic bag consumption has been a vital part of Turkey’s transformation under the Zero Waste Project. Between June 2017 and September 2025, zero waste management systems were established in 205,000 buildings and campuses, and 25 million citizens received zero waste training. From 2017 to 2024, a total of 74.5 million tons of waste were recovered for the economy, including 32.5 million tons of paper-cardboard, 9.1 million tons of plastic, and 6.4 million tons of metal. The project aims to increase the recovery rate to 60% by 2035 and 70% by 2053.
The Essential Role of Reusable Bags in Plastic Reduction
One of the most critical factors in sustaining the success of the plastic bag fee is the widespread use of reusable bags. Reusable solutions significantly reduce the need for single-use plastics and lower raw material consumption through long-term durability. By limiting waste generation and reducing carbon emissions from production and disposal processes, reusable bags have become a cornerstone of sustainable consumption habits rather than just a personal preference.
